All we want for Christmas is less South strife

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 22/12/2012

» All we want for Christmas is often something we can't get. World peace? Poverty eradication? That would make Santa sweat like a North Pole pig. No more violence, no more discrimination, no more settlements in the West Bank, no more brutality against the Rohingya, no more extremism, no more torture, no more drone attacks, no more school shootings, no more global warming, no more deportation of migrant workers, no more censorship, no more floods, earthquakes, tsunamis - wish for those and we're going to sound like John "Imagine" Lennon with flowers in his hair, though I believe Lennon was often right in general and wrong in some particulars.

Force-fed film belongs deep in dark vaults

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 13/12/2014

» Strange things have happened at the cinemas. First, Hitler showed up in a Thai short film sponsored by the government (meaning by taxpayers), the radioactive gatecrasher into a party of virtuous citizens. Second, another Thai film featuring, among other things, a joke about the anal cleft — it's funny as long as it's not your anal cleft — is raking in a huge amount of money at the multiplexes, likely surpassing the 100-million-baht mark as you're reading this, which is after just four days of release. Cinema enlightens, even in the dark forest of swastikas and bodily bergschrunds.

    The women of Wanita

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 08/03/2017

» Nine years ago, Ropita Mahamat almost lost her son in a shooting incident, a dishearteningly familiar story in the Deep South. One night at 9pm in Pattani, her son was picking a relative from a pondok school when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him -- or, more likely, on someone else, though the bullets hit him. This circumstance, like so many similar ones in the region, was never clearly explained.

A place where indies can thrive

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 08/03/2018

» The stone latticework of Cinema Oasis gives its façade a vaguely Middle Eastern look. Up on the 2nd floor gallery that runs along the screening room, pockets of sunlight shine in through the gaps in the pattern. Looking down, you see what's left of what was once a large pond. An oasis, maybe, as the name suggests.

    Changing the narrative

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 02/09/2022

» A man returns home from work in Malaysia after Covid-19 struck, then gets lost in a bureaucratic labyrinth trying to get government handouts. Another woman finds a job at a factory, but the rules require her to compromise her faith. In Yala, a skater boy sets out in search of a friendly park where he can enjoy his ride. A hijab-wearing K-pop fanatic is getting married to a man who has just converted to Islam. And in a Pattani family, a young man watches his mother being possessed by a spirit, possibly a black-magic attack from his business rival.
