'Shakespeare' must live

    Oped, Postbag, Published on 15/08/2017

» Re: "Court cites national security to extend 'Shakespeare' ban," (BP, Aug 12). As makers of the films in question, we're writing to thank you for printing the news of our struggle for cinematic freedom. However, there is a small error of fact regarding the documentary we made while fighting the censors to rescind the ban on our Macbeth movie Shakespeare Must Die. Censor Must Die (sic, not 'Censors Must Die') was indeed submitted to the Board of Film Censors, which made the historic ruling citing Article 27(1) of the Royal Edict on Film & Video 2008 that "films made from events that actually happened" do not need to go through the censorship process. Significantly, this set a legal precedent which means that purist documentaries are now exempt from censorship. While we will indeed test this ruling soon with our next documentary film, we have not yet done so.

    Very slow learners

» In his Sept 8 letter Songdej Praditsmanon writes that student Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal "was already condemned by fair-minded individuals and cursed by many alumni" but what he doesn't explain is why. To some of us simple minded non-Chula graduates it appears that Mr Netiwit has clearly understood the message from King Rama V given in 1873 when he expressed "the necessity of rebuilding a more equal relationship between different groups in society". What isn't apparent is that the administrators running the university have understood this message and taken steps to advance these opinions.

    Merkel sets direction for Europe

News, John Lloyd, Published on 11/09/2017

» Germans will choose a government on Sept 24, and that government is likely to be headed, for the twelfth year running, by Angela Merkel. The uncharismatic 63-year-old from East Germany may not have captured her fellow Germans' hearts, but she has appealed so strongly to their rational selves that polls suggest they find no reason to replace her.

It's 'Sherpa time' without the mountain

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/05/2020

» Towards the end of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's uncomfortable grilling by MPs last week he complained that preparing for the meeting had taken up a lot of "Sherpa time". As it seems unlikely Boris is planning an Everest expedition, the "Sherpas" he was referring to are apparently those people with the unenviable task of helping him prepare for such questioning, or more accurately, the ones who do all the hard work.

Now, for a completely different clash of civilisations

News, John Lloyd, Published on 18/12/2017

» The Darkest Hour, a film which emphasises the courage and iron will of Winston Churchill through the first weeks of World War II, is drawing audiences and praise on its release in North America. It shows new generations that this man -- mocked and marginalised in the 1930s by his party -- was an inspirational leader during those bleak days, and beyond. Yet the acclaimed war-time prime minister was also an imperialist and a racist.

Here's why Theresa May is so furious at Trump

News, Therese Raphael, Published on 05/12/2017

» When President Donald Trump retweeted three inflammatory videos from the anti-Muslim group Britain First last week, he set the entire UK establishment on fire. At a time when the country is bitterly divided and distracted by Brexit, getting the public's attention, much less uniting much of it, was some feat.

America and the problem of weak fascism

News, Eli Lake, Published on 18/08/2017

» There is no question that President Donald Trump's shifting reactions to the domestic terrorism in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been odious. While he condemned the murder of Heather Heyer, his equivocations, hedges and moral equivalency in the last few days signal a quiet approval of white supremacists. "What about the alt-left?"

Time to cut the 'superior' down to size

News, Paritta Wangkiat, Published on 18/08/2017

» The white supremacist rally on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia against the planned removal of the statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee should not just be seen as another story about America to us here in Thailand.
