» The fixed line versus Wi-Fi debate continues to be a popular one. And with technologies like Wi-Gig and Wi-Fi 6 in the pipeline, the debate will only intensify. Current Wi-Fi technologies work inside the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands; they also have user-friendly version numbers now. Wi-Fi 4 came out in 2009 under the name 802.11n, Wi-Fi 5 arrived in 2014 as 802.11ac and Wi-Fi 6 is due in 2019 as 802.11.ax. In the near future, you'll see these numbers start to appear on your devices, but not every manufacturer will bother to use the new designations. Wi-Fi numbers 1-3 represent even older, now mostly unused versions.

No new Vistas for us to view?

» After Microsoft Bob and Windows ME, Vista would have to be the least-loved Windows operating system. It arrived in 2007 on Jan 30, and on April 11 will no longer be a supported OS. That means no more security updates, no hotfixes and no support options, paid or otherwise. Readers will not be surprised to learn that Microsoft is recommending that any remaining Vista users upgrade to Windows 10. You may be thinking that if you are a really large organisation and are willing to pay, Microsoft will provide support just like they still do for some XP customers. But the word on the street is they won't for Vista.

Apple Store frustrations

» I was wondering how to start my first regular article for the year when I visited an Apple Store with a friend. He was planning to drop off an iPhone with a cracked screen for repair. The store was large, filled with rows of tables holding Apple gear. There were lots of customers and many Apple "Geniuses", each with a tablet to assist customers. I was carrying my Samsung Galaxy S5 and no lightning bolt had struck me. So far, so good.

Updates confuse and infuriate users

» Most software builders want each successive version of their application to be better, faster and have more features. In the latest version of Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo decided to buck the trend and remove useful features to the point where their application is next to useless. They've started by no longer indicating if one of your contacts was online or not. I typically only send a message to someone I see is online. Yahoo also decided to hide many of your contacts, make it hard to add them, and I'm not sure where conversation history went. They removed groups, audio and video chat, got rid of emoticons and a lot of other stuff including no configuration of options. Basically they took a good, usable application and turned it into a steaming pile of trash.

» Which is the world's most valuable brand? A number of them should pop into mind like Coca-Cola, Apple and Cartier. The new leader of the pack however is Google taking the slot from Apple based on the recent BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study. With a 32% increase in brand value they were a big mover since last year, while Apple dropped in value over the same period. Other IT names are in the top 10 like Microsoft at third, Facebook at fifth and Amazon at seventh place.

Latest Chinese tablets a viable alternative

» It has been a week and I really like my inexpensive 12-inch Chinese tablet made by Chuwi. I just added a 64GB MicroSD card that immediately popped up as D: drive when I booted into Windows 10. This will be the first Windows 10 based machine that is all mine and so far I have been impressed. The unit has no problems running a program like Visio and I have already used it for a presentation at a client's site. The screen is excellent and I like the way the unit notes when I have disconnected it from the keyboard and asks if I want to change to tablet mode under Windows. I used the Wi-Fi to connect to my mobile phone acting as a hot spot and there were no issues at all. Battery life has been good but that is one aspect I have not had the chance to really test out and reading some blog entries it takes a few charges to reach the full capacity.

Samsung: Wannabe Apple Corp

» I recently spent a week roughly south of Buri Ram in the Northeast. I was far enough away that my AIS SIM could not reliably pick up data and it was an interesting feeling to be disconnected for such a time. There are now apparently psychological conditions being defined for those who feel a lack of continuous connectivity but for my part at least it was a short enough time to be a novel experience. It did highlight just how much those who are part of the modern world rely on connectivity for news and contact. When I was younger we thought nothing of waiting a few weeks for a reply to a written letter. These days some feel put out if they don’t get a reply within a few seconds.
