Hairy situation

» Schools are back in session and so is the debate over the student hairstyle. A new batch of pictures of students whose hair got cut or shaved poorly against their will, as a form of punishment, by their teachers has been recently circulated online. We're probably getting another set once the next hair inspection day comes. Last Friday, student activists submitted a petition to the Ministry of Education asking for clarity over the hairstyle rule. You see, the ministry has already allowed students to wear their hair long so long as it's neat and complies with other conditions. However, a few schools still take it upon themselves to cut students' hair that they deem "inappropriate".

» Over the past few years, American superheroes have dominated the movies in cinemas and series on various streaming services. That is likely to continue since Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe consists of planned releases in 2023 and 2024, while DC Extended Universe also has at least five films to be released next year. Last month, a reboot of the Red Eagle, perhaps Thailand's best-known superhero, was also announced for a planned release in 2024. » #HimmapanMarshmallow trended during the long weekend last week, showcasing kawaii rendition of Thai mythical creatures founded at Buddhist temples in the north and the northeastern regions of Thailand. Why the hashtag? I guess Himmapan (magical forest) is because these creatures are mythical and marshmallows because they have been rendered roundish and cuddly.

The first week of "new normal"

» Last Sunday, Covid-19 curbs have been eased as 13 types of businesses were allowed to reopen after a month-long halt while four airlines resume domestic flights to 14 provinces since last Friday. Markets, public parks, food shops, barbershops, pet groomers and more resume operations under safety conditions, giving us back a sense of quasi-normalcy. The silver lining is that more businesses may be reopened if the daily tally of Covid-19 remains low (keeping fingers and toes crossed). In case you want to head out this weekend, you can look forwards to this.

» Mumford & Sons is coming to Bangkok for their debut performance! The Grammy-award winning British rock band, which consists of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane, was formed in 2007 and has released four studio albums so far. Their debut album Sigh No More climbed up to No.2 on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, eventually earning them Best British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards 2011. Their second album Babel received a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2013. These are just a fraction of their long list of accolades and nominations they have garnered. » Living up to its name, Siam Discovery The Exploratorium continues to bring art and creativity to the city with their latest event "Siam Discovery: Discovery Street Culture". As part of the event, a core member of UFO907, noted graffiti crew from New York, is having his first exhibition titled "Zero To Hero" in Thailand, after two main exhibitions in Japan. We talked to the elusive artist about his long journey as graffiti artist, experience of creating art on the street and his quirky signature alien. The exhibition, which features several sculptures and many paintings created in a studio in Bangkok, runs until Feb 20 on the ground floor of Siam Discovery.
